Coole Park

This location is one of the most important historic destinations in the West of Ireland, it is right here that W.B. Yeats found his inspiration to write some of the famous literature and poetry that is now known worldwide. In the early 20th century, Coole Park was home to Lady Gregory, famous dramatist, folklorist and co-founder of Abbey Theatre. Coole Park, a rare and complex wetland system that is considered to be of global importance.

Visitors to this wonderful site can explore almost 400 hectares of wetland and woodland, covering many kilometres of nature trails while taking in the beauty of the woods, rivers, bare limestone and Coole Lake. This nature reserve is a must-see for all guests staying at The Claregalway Hotel. While there, be sure to visit the “Autograph Tree” where the likes of William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge and Sean O’ Casey all came to experience its magic. They along with and many others carved their initials on an old Copper Beech that still stands in the walled garden today. A spectacular sight.
